Upgrading Your Hottop Coffee Roaster

  Over the years there have been four models of Hottop Coffee Roasters with variations in the "P" and "B" models. Even with those changes, the basic design has remained quite constant. This allows Hottop to offer upgrade kits which will give older Hottop Coffee Roasters virtually all the benefits and function of the newer models.
  Before considering an upgrade please be aware that some of the upgrades require disassembling the roaster nearly completely. Before ordering please be sure that you are capable of completing the task.
NOTE: In particular, upgrading to the "K" or to "-2" or to "-2K" from earlier models (non -2 and non K models) is quite involved.

~ Important Upgrade Instructions ~

When Upgrading FROM a KN-8828 and KN-8828D models
TO a KN-8828P-2 or a KN-8828B-2K
Specifically, pay attention to step #19a and #19b
Those steps cover important points necessary to allow later
control panels to operate with these two earlier models of machines.

When Installing the following kits in any machine:
UK-100, UK-101, UK-102, UK-103, and UK-104
Use the instructions found HERE.

For all KN-8828B-2K+ kits:
UK-105 - UK-106 - UK-107 - UK-108
Use the installation instructions found HERE.

If you do not have the emergency eject function installed in the machine (as evidenced by the "pull knob"
under the main fan on the back cover of the roaster), we highly recommend using kit UK-106 or UK-108.

NOTE: The KN-8828B and KN-8828B-2 control panels are no longer available.
    Those panels have been superseded by the KN-8828B-2K. The temperature sensor for the earlier "B" control panels (the button style sensor) is not compatible with the K-thermocouple sensor which must be used with the B-2K and P-2K control panels.
    If replacing a KN-8828B or KN-8828B-2 control panel you have your choice of replacing just the control panel with a KN-8828P-2 or you may upgrade to the "K" system (KN-8828P-2K or KN-8828B-2).

NOTE: When upgrading control systems be sure to download the latest owners manual. There may be differences in the safety and control systems programmed into the control panel of which you are unaware that affect operation.

 
How to Use the Upgrade Matrix
1) Find your current roaster model along the top in the lavender squares. It is important to correctly and accurately identify your model. To do so, please refer to THIS guide.
2) Find the model you wish to convert to along the left in the blue-green squares.
3) Where the row and column converge will indicate if the conversion is possible or recommended, and what parts will be necessary.
Example: To upgrade from a KN-8828B to a KN-8828P-2K you would use the upgrade kit, part "UK-102."
Note: To make the matrix easier to read, we have not used the "KN" text in the model designations.

COLOR CODING
The color coding in the above matrix only represents the relative difficulty of each upgrade. Be aware that these "ratings" are of a general nature. You are the best judge as to whether you possess the skills and experience to successfully complete them.

  MOST DIFFICULT - Requires removing all major components inside roaster (eject mechanism, motor, heating element, fusible link, etc.) and disassembling the frame to replace horizontal frame member. Requires good organizational skills.
DIFFICULT- Requires the removal of the roast chambers rear wall. Easier than the "red" level because the frame does not have to be disassembled. Still requires removing nearly all the same components as the red level
SLIGHTLY DIFFICULT - Requires disconnecting all wires on the main circuit board in order to be able to remove the base and replace the main circuit board. Easier than the "ORANGE" level because the major components do not need to be removed.
EASY - This change would only require the switching of the control panel by removing the old one and installing the replacement. Normally would not require any further disassembly.
X POINTLESS or NOT RECOMMENDED - An unnecessary downgrade. For example, there is no need to go from a "-2" model to one without the emergency eject mechanism.
NLA NO LONGER AVAILABLE- A discontinued item.

*1 -UK-102 and UK-104 and P12f - These items may only be installed on machines with an existing chaff tray switch.
  If your machine displays a notice that the chaff tray needs to be removed before the next roast can begin, it has a chaff tray switch.
If you are not sure, remove your chaff tray and look into the void where the tray slides. On the right side of that cubby area wil be an activating arm of the switch in a cutout of the metal frame. Do not order any of these three items if you do not see that switch.
